This is Kayla. She is going to be a senior at Parkland High School this year and she is an extremely accomplished athlete. With an entire senior year to go, she ALREADY has won 10 district golds, 2 district team golds, and 2 individual state medals in the 50 & 100 yard freestyle. She won the Dennis A. McGinley Award for the District's most outstanding swimmer and was Morning Call Swimmer of the Year. Let's not forget...she still has her SENIOR year to go! I met Kayla through her mom, Jaime, who I've been a coworker with for the past decade. I also happen to be pretty fond of Jaime, so when she asked me to take senior photos of her daughter, I was so incredibly humbled and equally as excited. I have to admit, this photoshoot exceeded my expectations ten fold. This was my first one-on-one senior photo shoot, and so, I wanted to go big. And Jaime wanted to go equally as big for her daughter. It was pretty special, to say the least. We started at Parkland High School, did a little session at the Easton Silk Mills with two outfit changes, and ended up at my house in Bangor, after hitting up a beautiful wheat field I've had my eyes on. (If you're good at geography, I live NOwhere near Parkland, so this was a full evening event!) When I say this shoot could not have gone better, I mean it. Kayla is the most down to Earth and humble young woman. Until she pulls her plethora of gold medals out of her bag of gold medals (lol), you would think she is just a beautiful, in (really great) shape, school-spirited, life-lover kind of girl.
I'm so grateful for this opportunity for so many reasons. Getting to spend time with a coworker outside of the hospital walls is always nice, but meeting Kayla and making her feel even more beautiful than she already is takes the cake. This shoot also brought up feelings of nostalgia since my mother was a Parkland grad. I grew up watching my cousins play Parkland football and THEN my brother married a Parkland girl! I bleed maroon, but Parkland is pretty special in my book. Getting to know another really cool human from Parkland shouldn't surprise me anymore because there seems to be a lot of them out there.
